The Department of Health Physical Education and Physical Medicine of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of Charles University has long focused on the interconnection of physical, medical and pedagogical sciences with the aim of promoting health, functional fitness and quality of life for all age and performance groups. Theoretical and practical teaching focuses on health and applied physical education, physical medicine, first aid, hygiene, regeneration and massage. It provides education in bachelor and master study programme Applied Physical Education and Sport for Persons with Special Needs (APES PSN), where students gain knowledge in the field of movement systems, prevention of musculoskeletal disorders, health physical education, applied physical activities and sport for persons with disabilities. 

The scientific and research activities of the department are focused on primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and health aspects of physical activity. Research focuses on the development and validation of controlled exercise programmes for different population groups, including the elderly, people with health impairments or disabilities, and on methods of teaching first aid, regeneration and sports massage. Significant attention is also paid to inclusion in education for people with special needs. 

As part of the so-called third role of the university, the department is actively involved in Lifelong education and popularization of physical activity for health promotion, including courses in health physical education and applied physical activities for the public and professionals and regular exercise for the elderly. It cooperates with institutions such as Jedličkův ústav, Centrum Paraple, and a number of sports clubs for people with specific needs and the Czech Paralympic Committee. Together with VSK Praha, it regularly organises a summer suburban sports camp for children with special needs. 

The department cooperates with professional societies (e.g. Czech Society of Sports Medicine, Czech Association of Applied Physical Activities, Czech Kinanthropological Society, Czech Society of Physical Education Teachers, etc.) and professional workplaces (e.g. APA Centre, FN Motol, State Health Institute, Czech School Inspection).
