Sustainability
Charles University has adopted the Sustainability Strategy 2030, which sets out the basic concept and aims of sustainable development across the University.
Its main aim is to move the CU towards sustainable operations by 2030, not only through a responsible approach to its operations, but also to its educational and creative activities. The strategy focuses on four key areas of development that reflect the core activities of the University and all its constituent parts:
Main University Activities
The CU's mission is to bring new knowledge and innovation through science and research and to offer a quality education reflecting the latest scientific knowledge that prepares learners for a satisfying life in a changing world.
Charles University is a leader in sustainable development among universities in Central Europe, which
Integrates the principles of environmental, social, and economic sustainability into its operations and activities, i.e., it is climate-neutral, reduces its environmental footprint, ensures fair practices and fulfillment of human needs in supply chains, and acts responsibly and participatively toward its staff and students within available resources.
In pursuit of its Vision and Mission, the CU will focus on four key areas of development that reflect its core activities. Each of the key areas has its own objective and further addresses several sub-areas of interest for which it sets sub-objectives.
These areas of interest, objectives and sub-objectives of the Strategy are based on the latest scientific knowledge and experience of the world's leading universities, reflect international frameworks and standards and are tailored to the purposes of the CU. The individual themes of sustainable development overlap and complement each other, so the chosen structure is to some extent fluid and has no fixed boundaries.
The Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of Charles University is actively involved in promoting sustainable development through various projects, research and educational activities. This engagement is in accordance with university-wide strategies and international initiatives focused on sustainability.
Green Deal Project - Promoting Green Skills and Sustainability in Universities (NPO 7.4): CU Sport was involved in this project, that lasted from January 2024 to December 2025. The aim was to support the development of green skills and sustainability in universities.
The key activities of the project include innovating existing courses in existing study programmes, creating new lifelong learning (LLL) programmes and concluding Memoranda of Strategic Cooperation.
Students of CU Sport also regularly participate in grant competitions to promote sustainability announced by the Rectorate, which have so far always resulted in a positive outcome in the form of implementation of steps and actions to increase sustainability at the faculty. Outcomes of the grant competition include, for example, the creation of two relaxation areas for students in the main building of the Faculty - Green Hub (2024) and Relax Hub (2025), the implementation of sustainable sports events (Sustainable Orienteering 2025), Sustainable Fashion Show (CU Sport SLOW) and other events.
