Equal Opportunities
“People are the foundation of the university. They are the bearers of the institution’s culture, which determines the level of education, research, and internal governance. Outstanding scholars and teachers are able to develop the potential of students who, partly thanks to this, come forward with questions, new ideas, and solutions—thus continuing where their teachers were not given the opportunity to reach. If we are to approach the world’s best universities, caring for people—their talent and experience, intuition and expertise—must be our top priority. The best people make the best university.”
(Strategic Plan of Charles University 2021–2025)
Charles University takes into account that even the best students can face a variety of obstacles and therefore prioritises equal opportunities. In 2022, the CU Equal Opportunities Plan, which was followed by the establishment of the Equal Opportunities Board. This agenda includes not only gender equality issues, but also support for carers, students and employees with various types of disadvantages, reconciliation of family and working life, ensuring a safe environment and other areas. Creating a culture of equal opportunities and a safe environment also included the creation and filling of a position of the University Ombudsperson.
The CU Equal Opportunities Plan 2025-2027 represents a significant shift in scope, structure and strategic development. One of its key innovations is its explicit focus on intersectionality, i.e. the intersection of different forms of inequality (e.g. based on gender, age, ethnicity, disability or social background). Whereas the previous plan focused primarily on gender equality, the new plan reflects a broader range of topics and responds to overlapping and interrelated forms of vulnerability, such as those related to age, ethnicity, health or socio-economic background.
The Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of Charles University has created an Equal Opportunities Plan for the period 2025-2027, which was created in connection with the Equal Opportunities Plan of Charles University. The plan was created through participation in the SUPPORTER project, which supported institutions in Central and Eastern Europe to develop intersectional, innovative, inclusive and impactful (4I) equality plans.
The CU Sport Equal Opportunities Plan is adjusted to the specific needs and realities of a sport-focused academic environment. This initiative reflects our ongoing efforts to translate university-wide strategic goals into meaningful and contextually sensitive measures that are relevant to the university culture, its disciplines and the community.
The partnership in the SUPPORTER project provided Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, Charles University with unique expertise and experience, which is not yet present in the Czech academic environment, where no other faculty with a sports focus has yet developed its own Gender Equality Plan project. This international collaboration has enabled us to contribute relevant perspectives to the university-wide plan, while strengthening our own ability to address gender issues specific to the field of sport science.
